Tutoring with a HEART (Health, Education, Arts, Reading & Training) Afterschool Program Offered at Juanita Hills Community
The Housing Authority of the City of High Point (HPHA) in partnership with the Community Tutoring & Literacy Connection (CTLC) is excited to announce a new afterschool tutoring opportunity for children in the Juanita Hills Community starting on September 30, 2013.
An open house and kickoff will be held on Friday, September 27, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in the Juanita Hills Community Room, 2701 Annmore Circle, High Point, NC 27262.
The free tutoring sessions will be offered to youth of Juanita Hills from kindergarten to twelfth grade on Mondays and Tuesdays from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. GED Prep will also be available to parents onsite or at Fairview Elementary School. Tutoring will be provided by High Point University student athletes. While the children attend tutoring sessions, parents can participate in the GED prep program. In addition to tutoring, the children will have increased access to healthy local food through the CTLC program.
CTLC has served over 300 families through Health Fairs, Financial Workshops, Afterschool Programs and Summer Enrichment Camps. The CTLC is a grassroots, multicultural, intervention founded in 2011 by Reverend Claire Robinson, Associate Pastor of Fairmont Park Baptist Church. The mission is to uplift the lives of children living in poverty through tutoring, learning experiences, character and leadership using the HEART model. The HEART model focuses on Health, Education, Arts, Reading and Training that inspires children to value education, excel and graduate on time", said Rev. Robinson, Founder/Executive Director of the CTLC.
The CLTC was able to expand the new tutoring site in the Juanita Hills community through the generosity of the Kiwanis Club of High Point’s $2,000 grant. Fairmont Park Baptist Church also received a $5,000 grant from the BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina Foundation and a $1,000 grant from the North Carolina Council of Churches.
Angela G. McGill, HPHA’s CEO says, "We are elated with our partnership with CTLC to provide literacy and healthy living for our families. We are grateful for the sponsors’ investments to build foundations and empower families for a brighter future."
The CTLC also has a tutoring/GED site at Fairview Elementary School that meets on Mondays and Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. open to the public.
